A Method of Computational Correction for Optical Distortion in Head-Mounted Displays
نویسنده
چکیده
Optical distortion is one of the optical aberrations of optical systems that do not affect image sharpness. Thus, it can be beneficial to correct optical distortion computationally rather than optically. Computational correction versus optical correction will generally yields lighter optical systems. This is of great importance for head-mounted displays where the weight of the viewer needs to be minimized for efficient performance, safety, and optimum duration of usage. We shall describe in this paper, one method of computational correction that consists in warping polygon vertices. It is the case, however, that the algorithms given can be easily rewritten to handle pixels rather than vertices warpings.

Using texture maps to correct for optical distortion in head-mounted displays
This paper describes a fast method of correcting for optical distortion in head-mounted displays (HMDs). Since the distorted display surface in an HMD is not rectilinear, the shape and location of the graphics window used with the display must be chosen carefully, and some corrections made to the predistortion model. A distortion correction might be performed with optics that reverse the distor...
متن کاملRegistration Error Analysis for Augmented Reality
Augmented reality (AR) systems typically use see-through head-mounted displays (STHMDs) to superimpose images of computer-generated objects onto the user’s view of the real environment in order to augment it with additional information. The main failing of current AR systems is that the virtual objects displayed in the STHMD appear in the wrong position relative to the real environment. This re...
متن کاملA Computational Model for the Stereoscopic Optics of a Head-Mounted Display
For stereoscopic photography or telepresence, orthostereoscopy occurs when the perceived size, shape, and relative position of objects in the three-dimensional scene being viewed match those of the physical objects in front of the camera. In Virtual Reality, the simulated scene has no physical counterpart, so orthostereoscopy must be defined in this case as constancy, as the head moves around, ...
متن کاملVery Large Format Stereoscopic Head-Up Display for the Airport Tower
Head-up displays typically used in aircraft and automobiles have limited fields of view, generally less than 30◦. Such systems can provide large, essentially unlimited fields of regard if they are head-mounted. A new alternative for provision of large fields of regard without requiring a head mount is a large format holographic optical element that can serve as a see-though polarization preserv...
متن کاملEvaluation of Calibration Procedures for Optical See-Through Head-Mounted Displays
Optical see-through head-mounted displays (HMDs) are less commonly used because they are difficult to accurately calibrate. In this article, we report a user study to compare the accuracy of 4 variants of the SPAAM calibration method. Among the 4 variants, Stylus-marker calibration, where the user aligns a crosshair projected in the HMD with a tracked stylus tip, achieved the most accurate resu...
